Client Spotlight: New YMCA Relationship Has Deep Roots

Developing relationships is a key tenant of Country Club Bank culture.

During the pandemic, long-standing relationships involving two CCBers created a win-win for the bank, a major nonprofit and the community the nonprofit serves.

The YMCA of Greater Kansas City had been a client of Linda Cole's at her prior bank, and she had worked with the organization's Chief Financial Officer. And, Regional President Craig Gaffney has served on the YMCA’s board of directors for several years. Working together during the pandemic, the duo along with other CCB team members transitioned the YMCA to Country Club Bank as a depository, lending and treasury client.

The YMCA’s revenues were dealt a major blow when COVID-19 hit. To make good on its promise of delivering services to thousands of youth, parents and seniors throughout Kansas City, the organization had to reinvent itself.

John Mikos, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City

In a recent episode of our “Banking on KC” podcast, John Mikos, YMCA CEO, said, “Our organization had about 45% less revenue than it did before. And that impacts your ability to hire staff, pay the bills, the utilities and keep the infrastructure going. And I'm so proud of our local bank Country Club Bank, who stepped in and worked with us over this last year to ensure we were going to be around for the next 100 years.”

In addition to helping the YMCA navigate pandemic challenges, Country Club Bank is part of a collaborative funding effort, involving the City of Kansas City and community donors, that transformed the old Lyric Theatre into a new state-of-the-art YMCA venue that is revitalizing the core of downtown with programs for all ages. The building reopened as the Kirk Family YMCA on Oct. 11, 2021. It offers cardio classes, yoga, strength training, a teaching kitchen, indoor pools, a spin studio, track, gym, and many other amenities. JE Dunn was the contractor on the project.

We are grateful for the long-standing relationships that resulted in a brand-new relationship, and we’re proud to collaborate with an organization that values community as much as we do.
