A Message From Frank:
My career in banking began after I tried and failed in my first job as a stockbroker. When I began work as a stockbroker in 1973 the Dow Jones Industrial average was over 1,000. When I left in 1974, it was under 500. I took the civil service exam and landed a job with the SBA, where I worked from 1975 to 1979. I completed an MBA at the same time in night school. I was working with local banks in that capacity and one of those banks, Traders Bank offered me a job running their credit department. I started there in 1979, and went through an acquisition and merger with Bank of Kansas City. By the time I left in 1986 I was a commercial lender. I next went to Mid American Bank which was then owned by John Sullivan. That bank was acquired by the Hall family, sold to Mercantile Bank, merged with Mark Twain Bank, acquired by Firststar Bank, and merged with US Bank. So between 1986 and 2006, I worked for different banks without ever really changing jobs.
My father was a municipal bond salesman, which was Byron Thompson’s first job. So he knew Byron and Byron had coached briefly a church league basketball team I was on. I had also competed against Country Club Bank and knew it was a good organization. So when I heard from Mike McGannon in 2006, I welcomed the chance to get out of the big corporate bank and back to a family owned bank. I have now spent fourteen years at Country Club Bank.
As far as new adventures, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my wife Marilyn riding our horses at Hillsdale Lake state park. I have taught my four grandchildren to play tennis. The oldest of them, Gloria, is fourteen and has just started beating me. With more time on the court, I hope to put an end to that, if only for a short while. Two of my grandchildren attend the French language immersion school, Académie Lafayette, a CCB customer. Marilyn and I have been working on our French for several years now and hope to get back to France when normal life resumes.
One of the great things about banking is that it provides you with a ring side seat on the American economy which is utterly fascinating. My advice to our associates is to read each day a couple of articles in the Wall Street Journal, whatever most interests you. I’ve read this paper almost daily for forty five years and it is the best written and most reliable account not just of our economy but of our entire world.
