Mike McGannon, who joined CCB in 1985 after receiving a call from Byron Thompson, recalls his days at the bank and shares his plans for life in retirement.
How Mike’s career in banking began:
I started in 1977 as a teller with Columbia Union Bank. It was a family-owned bank with locations downtown and on the Country Club Plaza. I loved the feel of banking and the interaction with the clientele. I moved on to Commerce Bank with a position in the Consumer Lending Operations area. After two years in that position, I interviewed for a spot in their Management Training Program. That was the break I was hoping for because it gave me the opportunity to train and shadow with the commercial bankers I aspired to become.
In spring 1985, I received a call from Byron Thompson to discuss an opportunity to work with him and Bob Buckner at CCB! I knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime working with two greatly respected and accomplished bankers. I came into the organization to take on Bob’s loan portfolio and later became the Head of Lending. Byron set the tone when he and Bob bought the bank in March 1985—his vision, passion and will to succeed was on full display on a daily basis. I am forever grateful that I was able to be a part of this great organization and to be a member of a team that was able to execute to the expectations of the new ownership group.
Mike’s next adventures:
My wife Patty and I have three married children and six grandchildren who will keep us quite busy. I also will put more effort into hopefully becoming a better golfer… we’ll see about that!
Mike’s advice for CCB associates:
My advice to all my great associates is simply based upon what I think has worked well for me these last 38 years.
Think about coming to the bank every day with proper preparation and focus on the task at hand—whatever that is for you. Have a vision, passion and will to succeed as Byron so vividly exemplified.
When you make a mistake (and I made plenty), own it, work hard to clean it up, learn from it and then move forward with confidence and a positive mindset that it made you a better banker and asset to this organization.
Finally, and this was a “battle cry” that Bob Buckner started many years ago that always resonated with me: “ Do the right thing, the right way, the first time.”
I am so fortunate to have had such a longstanding banking career in this organization and I thank The Thompson family—Paul, Mary, Mark, Tim and Chris—for their support and encouragement these past 38 years. Finally, I can’t express enough how fantastic all of you are, and I am so proud to have been able to work shoulder to shoulder with so many of you. I love you all!!
All associates are welcomed to join us on June 29 for a breakfast celebrating Mike's career. Please RSVP here!
