A Message From Lynn
When did your career in banking begin?
My first banking job was safe deposit clerk. I was sixteen and escorted people to and from their SDBs. I worked there summers, holidays and weekends until I married and moved to Arlington, VA while my husband was stationed at the Pentagon. Last job before I left was private secretary to one of the executives.
In the D. C. area I had job offers from National Geographic, the Fed and IBM. I chose IBM and continued my work with them after we returned to Chicago. My husband took a job as assistant executive director of Research Hospital so we moved to KC in 1960.
Locally, after my children were in school I worked in the brand new trust department of Kansas City Bank & Trust Co. When my marriage failed I promised myself if I was going to raise two children by myself I was going to do it on a man’s wages so I left banking for the securities industry and ultimately passed all of the necessary exams to get security licenses. The industry was very chauvinistic—women weren’t brokers—but the owners were wonderful and said I could study for the exams. The caveat was I had to do it on my own time.
So, for six months, after kiddos were in bed, I studied from 10 pm to 2 am and worked full time at the brokerage as a secretary. I became licensed sometime in the 60s (how time flies when you’re having fun) much to the bemused congratulations of my employers. I managed a retail bond department for them for 19 years. My career took me to that brokerage’s Wall Street office where I had national responsibility in the Municipal Bond Department. I travelled all over the United States for the firm helping brokers learn how to sell municipal bonds.
I loved what I was doing but I didn’t care for the New York culture so I returned to Kansas City. Long story short I left to become part of CCB in 1991.
What Advice do you have for CCB Associates?
Toni asked if I had any advice for you. It’s just this—love, love, love what you do. Life is so short. The 30 years I’ve spent here now seem like about 20 minutes. Helping people manage their money is an incredible responsibility but it was my life’s passion.
Next Adventure?
Future plans will depend on COVID. They will involve helping people in some way. I’ll find the path and dance down it.
Many thanks to so many of you who have made this a wonderful place to work—you know who you are. You are a keepsake in my heart.
Lynn
