What’s Happenin’ Around Town - October 2021

Kansas City has something to offer everyone, from art shows and festivals to music events and special exhibits. And there's always a smorgasbord of new eateries if all that activity leaves you hungry! Each month we will share a few items of special note.


Events, Exhibits and Other Activities


Festa Italiana runs from Oct. 8-10 at Zona Rosa. This year’s event includes Italian food, a beer garden, a car show and novelty booths. Proceeds go to UNICO KC’s scholarship fund.

 

Cornucopia Fall Festival gets underway in the Power & Light District on October 15 and runs through October 17. Billed as Kansas City's largest fall festival, this year's family-friendly event boasts the first-ever Ferris wheel in Downtown Kansas City. Free admission.




 

Spooky Snake Saturday Parade & Family Fun Festival throughout North Kansas City has been rescheduled for Oct. 23. There will be entertainment for attendeesof all ages, a stationary parade, costumes and a carnival.





 

NASCAR at Kansas Speedway: If you’re looking for a different kind of “zoom,” the NASCAR playoffs will return Oct. 23-24. You can snag a 2-day package via the Kansas Speedway website.

 

The American Royal Livestock Show runs through Oct. 24. Check the schedule and ticket information here











 

The Halloween Haunt at World of Fun runs through October 30. There’s also a Great Pumpkin Fest for those who want to enjoy some scare-free fun!







 

Boo at the Zoo returns October 30-31 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event provides a not-so-scary, safe trick-or-treating experience for the kiddos and others who are faint of heart! Family-friendly costumes are welcome, and trick-or-treat bags will be provided. Activities include a dance party with DJ Joe, a pint-sized hay maze, pedal tractors, and more. The zoo animals will also be receiving pumpkin enrichment at scheduled times throughout the weekend.

 

Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. You still have time to purchase tickets to this popular international exhibition—it’s been extended through January 2022. The exhibit features more than 700 original artifacts from 20 worldwide institutions, museums and private collections. Reservations are required, and ticket availability is limited.

 

The Testimony exhibit runs through March 27, 2022. The exhibit, offered in collaboration by the Kansas-City based African American Artists Collective and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, features a range of media amplifying the artists’ diverse style and messages.




 

Restaurant Openings

If the cooler weather has you in the mood to try some new culinary experiences, you won’t be disappointed. Dozens of new restaurants have launched the last several weeks, and several more are on tap to open later this fall. If you’re considering a meal out, be sure to check the restaurant’s website—occasionally an opening can be delayed! Here is a sampling of several you might want to check out.


Café Corazón opened its second Latin American-inspired coffee shop on the corner of Southwest Boulevard and Baltimore. The family-owned business strives to bring a cultural connection to the area along with its Latin and indigenous specialty coffee drinks, juices, smoothies, foods and sweets.


Chartreuse Saloon, Jill Cockson’s latest project, opened in the East Crossroads in the former Madrigall Dance Hall on October 5. In a nod to saloon culture, the neighborhood bar features a pool table, darts, chess, checkers, nachos, beverages and more.


Chewology, at 900 Westport Road, focuses on Taiwanese street food.


Dior Restaurant, an upscale casual American restaurant, opened at 6995 W. 151st Street in Overland Park. It offers favorites such as fried catfish and big cuts of steak in its from-scratch kitchen.


The long-awaited Electric Park Garden Bar at J. Rieger & Co., 2700 Guinotte Ave. opened Thurs day, October 7. The park-like venue features fire pits, a swing set table, lounge seating and a menu inspired by theme parks and soda parlors.


Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue opened at 8721 Ryckert St., in Lenexa's City Center.


Fountain City Winery has opened at 1409 W. 11th St. in the West Bottoms. In addition to wine, beer and seasonal cocktails are served.


Hawaiian Bros Island Grillopened its eighth Kansas City area location at 16179 W. 87th Street in Lenexa. Their Hawaiian-inspired lunches include rice, macaroni salad and a protein such as slow-roasted pork, grilled teriyaki chicken, and sweet-and-spicy chicken. Look for another location to open soon at 13680 Metcalf.


HomeGrown opened in Brookside in the former Avenues Bistro space at 338 W. 63rd Street. The new daytime eatery features locally-sourced, made-from-scratch favorites such as pop tarts, avocado toast and brunch cocktails.


Joelle’s Baked With Love is a new bakery at 11119 N. Oak Trafficway. It features standard, specialty and gourmet cupcakes; muffins; and scones in savory and sweet flavors.


Jousting Pigs BBQ opened recently at 1702 Village West Parkway, at The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas. They offer competition-quality BBQ.


King G Bar & Deli is now open in the Crossroads at 18th and Locust. It offers deli sandwiches, fresh Bavarian-style pretzels and charcuterie boards, craft beers and natural wines along with two separate late-night bars.


La Fuente Mexican Street Food is expected to open another location at 1512 N.W. Woods Chapel Road in Blue Springs later in October.


Oddly Correct, a coffee bar, has reopened at its new location at 4141 Troost Ave. It features a tasting room and brew bar.


River Bluff Brewing, a St. Joseph brewery, is opening soon at 201 Main St. in Kansas City’s River Market.


Sail Away Wine has opened at 309 Armour Road, North Kansas City. Patrons are issued a “wine passport” they can use to sample of 75 wines from around the world using a wine dispensing system. Craft beers, spirits and food are also offered.


Scratch Gourmet Express & Catering, offering gourmet express meals, catering and private wine tasting dinners, has opened at 3939 W. 69th Terrace in the Prairie Village Shops.


Taste Island Grill at 3605 Broadway is a new fast-casual Caribbean-inspired concept.


Tailleur, featuring European comfort food using local and seasonal ingredients, has opened at 3933 Main St. in Midtown.


Transit Coffee, a multi-roaster café that curates coffees from roasters around the country, including local favorites, has opened at 3940 Main St. They also offer tea and a food menu.
